Best Books for Writers

There are so many books on writing out there, but there’s only so much time in a day, and you can’t spend it all reading. However, there are some books that should be in every writer’s arsenal. These are some of my favorites, and I will add more to the list as I discover more.

On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King

“If you don’t have the time to read, you don’t have the time or the tools to write.”

Powerful words from Stephen King. Until I read this book, I always thought my inexplicable desire to write was abnormal. A revealing book full of advice, inspiration & much more.

Immediate Fiction: A Complete Writing Course by Jerry Cleaver

From the creator of The Writer’s Loft in Chicago, the book covers the writing process, including manuscript preparation, finding an idea, getting words on the page, staying unblocked, and submitting to agents & publishers.

Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott

A funny, honest, and deeply reassuring guide to writing and the emotional chaos that comes with it. Lamott reminds writers to take the work one small step at a time and to embrace imperfect first drafts.

Steering the Craft by Ursula K. Le Guin

A masterclass in prose mechanics from one of the great stylists. Clear exercises on rhythm, point of view, and sentence construction that sharpen your technical control.

Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg

A practice-driven approach to getting words on the page without overthinking. Encourages writing as a habit, ritual, and discipline.

Reading Like a Writer by Francine Prose

A reminder that great writing is learned through close reading. Prose dissects sentences from literary masters to show how craft actually works on the page.

The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron

A 12-week creativity reset that helps unblock and rebuild artistic confidence. It’s not craft-heavy, but it’s a transformative resource for many writers.

Save the Cat Writes a Novel by Jessica Brody

A clear breakdown of story structure using the popular Save the Cat framework. It’s practical and especially useful for understanding pacing and plot beats in commercial fiction.

Self-Editing for Fiction Writers by Renni Browne & Dave King

A hands-on guide to tightening prose. This book covers dialogue, exposition, point of view, and overwriting. It’s ideal for the revision stage, especially if you struggle with what to leave and what to delete.

The Situation and the Story by Vivian Gornick

This book is a snappy examination of narrative voice in non-fiction and memoir, but I think it’s equally valuable for fiction writers looking to refine perspective and authority.
